Legacy Experience

Summary
As a valued member of the Innovation Department, I was entrusted with a pivotal role in a project that underwent 5 crucial phases, from a simple idea to publication. My specific contribution was in phase 3, where I took charge of developing an application & responsive web app for Northwestern Mutual (NM) clients and users who sought estate planning services within the NM ecosystem.
I conducted thorough user experience research, utilizing research synthesis and using the UserZoom software for the user interviews and user testing process. The outcome was to obtain extensive data through research to achieve the most effective design.
Previously, the existing system merely provided a cursory overview of client assets, with no feasible means for users to engage with the information unless they consulted their NM Financial Advisor. I aimed to create a user-friendly experience that empowers users to take proactive action at any juncture in their lives, whether independently or with professional guidance.
To this end, I devised an intuitive onboarding process that enables users to input crucial information in a matter of seconds, while also offering the option to undergo a more comprehensive onboarding experience that covers all aspects of the app usage. Our ultimate goal was to create a seamless platform that simplifies the users’ lives during the most challenging of times, be it a joyous event like a birth or marriage or an arduous one like a loss of property or family.

Overview
Client: Innovation Department
Company: Northwestern Mutual

My Role: Lead User Experience Designer; Co-Lead Product Manager

I had the privilege of serving as the co-lead product manager and lead UX designer, spearheading Phase 3 of this 9-month-old (at the time) project from start to finish. My primary responsibility was to develop the initial visuals and present them to stakeholders, finally giving them an exclusive look at their initial vision. Collaborating closely with the product manager, I ensured a consistent design approach and provided valuable context and perspective on our research findings. By sharing our designs and research with stakeholders, we facilitated productive discussions and ensured everyone involved was on the same page. My contributions were vital to the success of this phase of the project, allowing it to pass phase 3, sped up phase 4, and is currently underway for publication by the end of the year, ending phase 5, and I take immense pride in that.
